We come from different worlds—finance, economics, startups, machine learning, and research—but we all ended up in the same place: frustrated by massive market inefficiencies and the complete lack of access to basic risk management tools. Each of us had witnessed firsthand how broken the traditional derivatives landscape had become, with institutional gatekeepers controlling access to instruments that could genuinely help businesses manage climate risk.
The human cost became impossible to ignore when we watched Hurricane Katrina devastate New Orleans, saw the Camp mystic floods, texas, and witnessed countless other climate disasters destroy small businesses that had no way to hedge their weather exposure. These weren't abstract market failures—they were real businesses, real livelihoods, and real communities getting wiped out by weather events that sophisticated financial instruments could have protected against. The tools existed, but they were locked away behind institutional walls.

The breaking point came when we realized that the same technology revolutionizing finance could finally democratize weather risk. Why should only Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan have access to temperature derivatives while small farmers, construction companies, and renewable energy operators remain completely exposed to climate volatility? The instruments exist, the need is massive, but the marketplace is fundamentally broken—designed for institutions, not the businesses that actually face the risk.
So we decided to ship Tempest. Our team combines decades of experience across traditional finance, economic modeling, machine learning research, and startup execution. We're supported by advisors from climate scientists who understand weather patterns and compliance experts who navigate regulatory frameworks. We're not here to incrementally improve the existing system—we're rebuilding derivatives from the ground up with blockchain infrastructure, transparent pricing, and global accessibility that puts climate risk management in the hands of everyone who needs it.
